The Kindness of Science – The Life and Work of Giancarlo Rastelli

A look at the life of one of the masters of medicine, Giancarlo Rastelli, a world-renowned cardiologist whose clinical innovations find their roots in his relationships with his patients. Giancarlo Rastelli (1933–1970) was a pioneer cardiac surgeon who—during his career as clinical investigator and surgeon at the Mayo Clinic cut short by illness—developed a novel surgical procedure that revolutionized the management of children with congenital heart disease. Rastelli lived a short, yet fascinating life. His work was ahead of its time and laid the foundation for the understanding and treatment of severely ill children with heart disease that still direct today’s clinical practice. Featuring Dr. Rastelli’s daughter, Antonella Rastelli—a physician and a scientist herself—and Dr. John Stulack, the program director of Mayo Clinic’s Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship.

A Journey in Palliative Care: from Cicely Saunders to Today’s Practice

This session offers an opportunity to meet a historical figure in Dame Cicely Saunders, an exceptional woman, nurse, social worker and physician who revolutionized the treatment of terminally ill patients by creating the first modern hospice in London, England. The session will feature Dr. Patrick Vinay, who after a successful career as a clinician scientist and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal, embarked on a enriching journey in palliative care at the Notre-Dame Hospital in Montreal, which he will share with us. Yvonne Parent, an LPN in Victoria, British Columbia, will describe her experience in taking care of patients on an oncology ward where palliative care needs are increasingly being confronted by legalized euthanasia.

This session will feature a conversation with bioethicists Drs. Pilar Calva and Melissa Moschella on the state of the art and current options for end-of-life care. Drs Calva and Moschella will offer a presentation on management options for terminally ill patients and clinical cases. A discussion with the audience will follow.

INNOVATORS IN BIOMEDICINE

Fully Integrated Care – Information Technology in Health Care

A meeting with Dr. Sarah Timmapuri, a board certified cardiologist that has fully taken up the opportunities offered by healthcare information technology. Dr. Timmapuri serves as the Chief Clinical Information Officer for Hackensack Meridian Health and partner at Bergen Invasive Cardiovascular Consultants at Hackensack UMC. Her work bridges the gap between clinical needs and information technology with a focus on the patient. Her talk will focus on the challenging but possible balance between patient-centered care and proficiency with the use of information technology and electronic medical records.

A Trailblazer of Scientific Education –Sr. Mary Jane Paolella, ASCJ

A presentation on Sr. Mary Jane Paolella, MS (1947-2018) a nationally recognized innovator in developing high-school educational programs in biotechnology, genome research and ethical issues. Working with a research team from Yale University, in 1996 Sr. Paolella pioneered a program at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, CT, that introduced a new field to high school education – gene sequencing – bringing a national spotlight to the school. Since then, her students have published 29 DNA sequences in the National Center of Biotechnology Information’s GenBank and have presented their work at scientific conferences around the country. In 2010, Sacred Heart Academy was recognized as one of the nation’s three best high schools for science by Intel. Defined by other scientists as “a pioneer in genomic sequencing education” and “a national treasure”, Sr. Paolella professed 50 years in religious life among the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was capable of tireless dialogue and was widely recognized as a calming influence and a voice of reason in science and ethics discussions.
